Im Winter 1994 arbeitete der Schauspieler Ron Vawter in Brüssel an einer Theaterproduktion über den mythischen griechischen Kämpfer Philoketes. Philoketes wurde von Odysseus auf der unbewohnten Insel Lemnos zurückgelassen, nachdem er auf seiner Reise nach Troja von einer Schlange gebissen worden war. Odysseus, sein Freund, ließ ihn im Stich, weil seine Wunde nicht heilte, was zu schmerzerfüllten Schreien und einem unerträglichen Gestank führte, der die anderen Soldaten plagte. Als bei Ron die Diagnose AIDS lautete, bekam diese Geschichte von Qual und Isolierung eine zusätzliche Bitterkeit, und er arrangierte die Zusammenarbeit mit dem niederländischen Regisseur Jan Ritsema an einer von diesem Mythos inspirierten Theaterproduktion. Eine internationale Künstlergruppe fand sich zusammen, um "Philoketes Variations" unter der Schirmherrschaft des Kaaitheaters in Belgien zu entwickeln. Ron starb, gerade als die Produktion fertiggestellt wurde. "The Last Time I Saw Ron" ist aus Filmmaterial hergestellt, das für das Stück gedreht wurde. During the winter of 1994, actor Ron Vawter was in Brussels working on a theater production about the mythical Greek warrior Philoketes. Philoketes has been abandoned by Odysseus on the uninhabited island of Lemnos after he has been bitten by a snake while on route to Troy. He was betrayed by his friend Odysseus because his wound would not heal, provoking mournful cries and an unbearable stench that distressed the other soldiers. When Ron was diagnosed with AIDS, this story of anguish and isolation took on added poignancy, and he arranged to collaborate with Dutch director Jan Ritsema on a theatrical production inspired by the myth. An international group of artists came together to develop "Philoketes Variations" unter the auspices of the Kaaitheater in Belgium. Ron passed away just as the production reached fruition. "The Last Time I Saw Ron" is made from footage shot for the play. The tape is a moving meditation on the power of art as a life-giving force, and on one man's extraordinary belief in that power.

Pendant l'hiver 1994, l'acteur Ron Vawter était à Bruxelles pour travailler sur une production théâtrale consacrée à Philoctète, un mythique guerrier grec. On raconte que Philoctète a été abandonné par Odyssée sur l'île inhabitée de Lemnos après qu'il ait été mordu par un serpent sur la route de Troie. Il a été trahi par son ami Odyssée sous prétexte que sa blessure, inguérissable, provoquerait une insupportable puanteur qui affligerait les autres soldats.
Quand Ron apprit qu'il avait le Sida, cette histoire d'isolement et d'angoisse prit une importance poignante pour lui. Il s'arrangea pour collaborer avec Jan Ritsema, metteur en scène hollandais, sur une production théâtrale inspirée par le mythe. Un groupe d'artistes vint développer les "variations de Philoctète" sous les auspices du Kaai-Theatre en Belgique. Ron mourut juste quand la pièce fût jouée. THE LAST TIME I SAW RON est un film du spectacle. L'enregistrement est une méditation émouvante sur le pouvoir de l'art à donner une "force de vie" et sur l'extraordinaire croyance d'un homme en ce pouvoir.
