synopsis:

„Valse Triste“ beginnt damit, daß ein Junge in einem amerikanischen Mittelklasse-Schlafzimmer zu Bett geht. Verglichen mit den vielen persönlichen, miniaturistischen Einstellungen in „Take the 5:10 to Dreamland“ sind die Bilder in diesem Film eher dokumentarisch, vermitteln in ihren Einstellungen und ihrer Tiefe mehr von der kleinbürgerlichen Geborgenheit. Eine Schlange dunkler, nasser Autos bewegt sich langsam eine überflutete Straße entlang; ein Mann und ein Junge verbrennen zeremoniell Gerümpel; ein Geschäftsmann an seinem Pult dreht sich um und blickt auf ein hinter ihm an der Wand hängendes Photo von einer Lokomotive; eine Halbnah-Einstellung eines Zugführers im Lenkerhaus seiner Lokomotive; Steinbrocken splittern von einer porösen Felswand und stürzen ins Wasser...“(Anthony Reveaux)

Conner's Kansas boyhood. Here, the period of the 1940s of his
source materials parallels his own life experiences.

to look over his shoulder to the photo of a locomotive on the
wall behind him; a medium shot of an engineer in the cab of his
locomotive; a shard of rock shears from a quarry wall and plunges

Nostalgic recreation of dreamland Kansas 1947 in Toto. Theme
music from I LOVE A MYSTERY radio programs (Jack, Doc, and Reggie
confront the enigmatic lines of railroad trains, sheep, black
cars, women exercising in an open field, grandma at the farm...)
Meanwhile, 13-year-old boy confronts reality. Sibelius grows old
in Finland and becomes a national monument.
