synopsis: The Film-Makers' Cooperative On-Line Catalog 2004

The hand-painting of this film is interrupted by, and interspersed with, a geometrically structured Mask of Death (one of those frightening human idea-shapes of dying) immediately caught-up in threads of streaming, polarized crystals of Light (elaborately step-printed, with simultaneous frame-to-frame dissolves and printer "pull-backs" creating an effect as if the room in which the film is being viewed was inhaling viscous strands of Life's chemical material). The blurred photo-image of a person appears briefly superimposed on these "streamings": then there is a short visual "exhale" of this "crystallized" light, as the screen appears to re-absorb its imagery and resolve itself into a pale violet scattering of dust, is it? ... a nebulae, perhaps - i.e., some semblance both earthly and cosmic and (as such) as enigmatic as "the face of God." Dans ce film, les images peintes à la main sont intercalées avec celles d'un masque mortuaire de forme géométrique (l'une de ces représentations effrayantes que l'homme se fait de la mort) pris dans les rayons ruisselants de cristaux de lumière polarisée. (Cet effet a été obtenu par une élaboration complexe comprenant un travail image par image avec des fondus et des zooms arrières faits à la tireuse, donnant l'impression que la salle où le film est projeté aspire la substance même de la vie à travers ces ruisseaux visqueux). L'image-photo brouillée d'une personne apparaît brièvement surimprimée à ces "ruissellements" lumineux. Puis l'écran semble réabsorber ces images en une courte "expiration" visuelle de lumière cristallisée. Le film s'achève dans une dispersion de poussière violet pâle, serait-ce... une nébuleuse? Semblance à la fois terrestre et cosmique aussi énigmatique que le visage de Dieu.
