Born 1952 in Cologne, Germany. 1975/76, study under John Baldessari at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, USA, 1976-79, study of philosophy at the University of Cologne. 1975, first colour experiments at the Oppenheim Studio, Cologne. Video actions since 1978. From 1992-97, professor at the Academy of Design, Karlsruhe. Professor at the Academy of Art in Munich since 1999.

The themes of vom Bruch’s oeuvre are critical, committed examinations of politics and current social questions. Advertising spots from TV and historical film material are alienated and given a new structure in his work. Vom Bruch always finds new and individual methods to produce the video installations which he consistently develops using sculptural elements. In ANGRIFF UND VERTEIDIGUNG (1986) and DIE VERHÄRTUNG DES DURCHSCHNITTSMENSCHEN (1986), he uses "the air as a bearer of information, as a sculptural quality" (vom Bruch) for the first time. He also works with broadcasting and receiving elements in COVENTRY – WAR REQUIEM (1987), which he made for the documenta 8. He took his most exciting step in the realisation of his installation RADARRAUM (1988), for which he did without the use of video camera, tape and recorder entirely, replacing them with ultrasound sensors and computer. The video sculpture thus became a radar-monitor sculpture. By means of ultrasound, the radar screen scanned material resistance in the room, and with the aid of the computer this was then transferred to the screen’s system of co-ordinates as electronically-projected, coloured structures. In the early 90s, vom Bruch turned back to politically-directed, ironic pictorial language in his installations. News images, film sequences and historical material are overlapped an apparently chaotic simultaneity, then heightened to an unbearable degree in order to demonstrate the inescapable power of electronic images.
